Please remember to ensure that your pet stays leashed when moving in nature. There are many wild animals in the nature of Lapland, such as bears and wolves, so letting a dog loose may cause dangerous situations. Dogs are welcome in most outdoor areas, but it is important to keep them on a leash and pick up their waste.

When there is no snow, all routes in Ylläs are dog friendly. Extensive trails guide you and your furry friend to listen to the babbling of streams and admire open marshlands. The summer hiking season usually lasts from June, when the snow melts, to October, when the snow covers the ground again.

In winter, there are many cross country skiing trails and winter routes in Ylläs. Ylläs has a total of 62 kilometers of cross-country skiing trails where you can ski with your dog. Dog friendly trails are marked with dog symbols. You can also walk your dog on a leash on all snowshoe trails. Snowshoeing routes are marked with blue sticks.

If your dog enjoys going to the dog park, there is a comfortable and spacious dog park in Äkäslompolo at the beginning of Nililahentie. There is a free parking area next to the dog park and a high fence surrounds the park.

Outdoor activities with your pet in Levi

During snow-free periods in Levi, dogs are welcome on all walking and hiking trails. Here you can find wonderful hiking trails in the Levi area.

In winter, there is a nice selection of cross country skiing trails for those who ski with their dog. Here you can see Levi’s trail map, where the dog trails are marked separately.

When traveling to Lapland in the winter, it’s good to take into account that the frost can be very cold in the winter, so bring the necessary equipment for your pet. It is good to pack a warm sweater or jacket and slippers to warm the paws, especially for a short-haired dog.

Dog lovers are welcome in the huts and shelters of Levi hiking and cross country skiing trails. From Kätkätunturi, along the outdoor trails on the promontory of Immeljärvi, there is the Korkeaniemi laavu, which is located at a great vantage point. It’s about a kilometer from Levi center. Laavu can also be reached by car along Immeltie. You can leave your car on the clearing on the shore of the lake at the foot of Kätkätunturi. It is about 500 meters from there to the laavu. Korkeaniemi Laavu has an outdoor toilet and a woodshed where you can get firewood.

At Kätkätunturi, you can also find Huippu laavu along Rykimäpolu, Merkkinen laavu the Kätkä – Pyhätunturi route, and Kätkä laavu along the south side of Katkätunturi.

Levi also has a few dog parks for dog friends.

1. Kittilä village dog park, Tuomarintie 3, 99100 Kittilä

The park has a size of 700 square meters and it is forest land. There is a small parking lot, a trash can for waste, and a bag machine.

2. Levi dog park, Muuntotie, 99130 Levi

Levi dog park is natural forest land and its size is 3,000 square meters. There is a small parking lot in front of the park and a trash can for dog waste. The park does not have separate areas for small and large dogs, but is shared by all.

You can get to Muuntotie when you turn off the Levi ympärystie near the Rakkavaara intersection.

Please remember to follow park etiquette in dog parks. Every dog owner has the responsibility and obligation to maintain safety and to be responsible for possible damages to their dog. Please also remember to consider other users of the dog park, i.e. close the gate when leaving and keep the area clean of waste. Also, make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date.

Pet-friendly restaurants and cafes in Lapland

There are many pet-friendly restaurants and cafes in the Levi and Ylläs areas where your pet is welcome. However, just to be sure, always remember to ask permission from the restaurant staff before taking your dog indoors.

Ylläs and Levi have pet-friendly restaurants and cafes everywhere. You can find, among other things, an atmospheric hut atmosphere, A’la Carte food prepared on an open fire grill, pub life and wonderful cafes. Many of these places are only open during high season, i.e. from mid-November to early March. However, a few places are also open in the summer. Ylläskammi is the highest restaurant in Finland, where you can enjoy the wonderful scenery of Yllästunturi peak. The selection includes salty and sweet, for small or bigger hunger.

You should head to Gondola Pizza if you’re craving pizza. In addition to pizzas, you get hot drinks and cafe products. Gondola Pizza is open within the opening hours of the gondola lifts.

2. Karilan Navettagalleria, Karilantie 31, 95970 Äkäslompolo 

Karila farm offers experiences, the recent history of Lapland and the rugged atmosphere of the farm. The farm also houses Karila’s Barn Gallery, i.e. an old barn that serves as a cafe. You can take your dog with you to experience authentic Lapland while enjoying delicious food.

This pub is a cozy pub operating in the Jouni Shopping Center in the middle of the village of Äkäslompolo. In Selvä Pyy you can get tasty pub food and there is also a wide selection of ciders and special beers.

In Ylläs’s legendary Velhon Kota, you can feel the atmosphere of the home and enjoy the glow of the fireplace. At Kota, you can get salty and sweet pastries from the local bakery, as well as various hot drinks. This is a place really worth experiencing and dog lovers will surely enjoy themselves!

Káfet means coffee or coffee break in Sami. At Káfet, you can get a variety of small savory dishes, coffee rolls and various salads.

Dogs are welcome in some of Yllästunturi’s gondola lifts, at summer and at winter time. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to admire the views in every direction with your furry friend? You can take the elevator to, for example, the previously mentioned restaurants Ylläskammi and Gondola Pizza.

Levi also has Express and Gondoli2000 cabin elevators with views, where dogs are welcome. Condoli2000 runs at a height of 20 meters along the western edge of the fell. You can find it at Gondolitie 1. The Express lift is located in the center of Levi village at Hissitie 8. Check the current opening hours of the lifts on the website.
